The MT Shasta Regional Sled Dog Race - An Overview -

The premiere event of the weekend will be a 135-mile distance sled dog race over the largest volcano in North America and through three national forests - Shasta, Klamath and Modoc.  This will be the first long distance sled dog race to be held in California!  Plans are to lengthen the distance to 200 miles, making it an Iditarod qualifying race in future years.  Shorter races, including 18 mile mid-distance, 4 mile speed class, skijoring races, and the infamous, Fast Women (& Mens) 4 mile-4 dog Benefit Fun Run are scheduled as well.  All races are sanctioned by the International Sled Dog Racing Assoc. and follow strict rules of conduct and dog care.

The three day event (Feb. 25th through the 27th, 2005) will be held from the Deer Mountain / Chuck Best Memorial Snowmobile Park Northeast of McCloud, Weed and Mt. Shasta off Hwy. 97 near the Oregon Border in Siskiyou County, California.   Other weekend events, banquets, and award ceremonies will be held throughout the towns of Weed, Mt. Shasta, and McCloud and Yreka.

Friday, February 25th - Vet Check/Education Day.  This event will be held at Shastice Park next to the Ice Rink in Mt. Shasta.  Come watch as every sled dog slated to race will get a complete veterinarian evaluation.  This day also serves as an educational event about Search & Rescue Operations and Sled Dog Racing.  There will be Little Angel (kiddie) sled rides; sled dog and agility dog demonstrations; History Displays; Chainsaw Carving; Music; Food; Craft; and more.  This event will also feature local Search & Rescue organizations and the Siskiyou Co. and Three Rivers Chapters of the American Red Cross.  The Red Cross will have an Emergency Communication Response Vehicle (ECRV) on display.  This half million dollar vehicle will be involved in race communications and community response training exercises at the Snowmobile Park during the race weekend.  For more information on the ECRV CLICK HERE

Friday evening in McCloud - A press conference attended by mushers and race organizers will be followed by a Gala Business Card Dinner Social for event sponsors, race organizers, spectators, and volunteers.  The long distance mushers will be draw starting positions at this event.  This event will be held at Raymond's Restaurant in McCloud.  Reservations required.  Call Mirella Wilson at 964-2443 for more information.

Saturday, Feb. 26th at the Snowmobile Park - Racing Activities Begin - At 9 a.m. on Saturday morning the long distance race will commence from Deer Mountain / Chuck Best Snowmobile Park.  Teams will begin lining up at 8 A.M.  After the long distance teams have started, the shorter eighteen mile mid-distance, the four-mile sprint and the skijoring races will run.  This will be a full day of racing.

Event Parking will be at the Veteran's Living Memorial Sculpture Garden courtesy of the Weed/Lake Shastina Kiwanis Club and the Weed High School Key Club.   Plan time to explore the wonderful sculptures either before the races or as you leave the event.  For more information on the Veteran's Living Memorial Sculpture Garden CLICK HERE

A shuttle bus from the Memorial Garden will take you to the Snowmobile Park Start Finish line activities on both race days.  The Shuttle will run from 7:30 am till 4:Food Concessions and event souvenirs will be available at the Sculpture garden and at the Snowmobile park. A small fee will be charged to cover the cost of the Shuttle (cost to be determined) unless we receive enough sponsorship donations to cover the shuttle expense.

Saturday Evening in Weed - Spaghetti dinner and auction will be hosted by the Sons of Italy at the Sons of Italy Hall.  Advance tickets available.   Call Sharon Butcher at 938-3402 for more details or to donate auction items.

Sunday, Feb. 27th at the Snowmobile Park - Another full day of racing activities.  By early morning (one A. M.), Sunday the 27th, the first distance teams will be crossing the finish line.  By midday, all the long distance teams will have completed the race.  The Eighteen-mile mid-distance race will commence at 9 a.m. followed by the four-mile sprint and skijoring races. 

Sunday evening in Weed - The Fourteen Angels Foundation MT Shasta Races Awards Banquet will be held at the St. Michael's Hall in Weed beginning at 5:30 PM. Dinner Cost is $10.00 Advance tickets for sale at all Scott Valley Bank locations. Mushers will be awarded their winnings.  Other awards are a Humanitarian award for best cared for Team.
